A young man has been seriously injured after falling into the sea with his bicycle during a racing tournament in Laamu Atoll.
Police said they received a report of a motorcycle crashing into the sea at the "Racing Championship-Laamu Edition" in Laamu Atoll Gan, yesterday around 09:45 in the morning.
It has been reported that a 20-year-old racer from Addu City was injured in the accident.
Authorities said that the victim was initially treated in the ICU of Laamu Gan Regional Hospital and was later transferred to the state-run IGMH in Malé for further treatment. It was also reported that the young man sustained injuries to his head and his legs.
He is expected to undergo surgery on his leg today, as his family posted on social media seeking blood donors.
Police are investigating the crash.
