The Parliamentary Budget Committee convened to deliberate on the 2027 State Budget has drawn up a schedule to wrap up the committee-level deliberation on the budget by the 19th of this month.
At the Committee meeting held today, the Committee Members decided on a schedule to meet with state agencies to discuss the budget targets and figures.
The Committee will summon senior officials of the Finance Ministry to clarify the details of the budget. In addition, meetings to seek technical advice and opinion from the Monetary Authority of Maldives (MMA) and the Auditor General, as required by the Rules of Procedure of the Parliament, will be held.
The committee also approved a motion by Fonadhoo MP Mohammed Mamdooh to give the administrative table of the parliament the power to determine which individual institutions are to be summoned after obtaining the views of the independent institutions in writing.
However, MP for Hithadhoo South Constituency Ibrahim Nazil insisted that this would take away their right to be heard. In response, the Chairman of the Committee, MP Ahmed Saleem, said the committee will have the opportunity to summon and question those who wish to meet it after examining the documents sent by the agencies.
The government of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has submitted a budget of MVR 59.7 billion for 2027.
