Police have tonight arrested the President of the main opposition party, MDP, Abdullah Shaheed, over allegations of sexual assault against a minor.
They said police arrested the former Foreign Minister under a court order.
He was arrested around 10:00 pm.
Police added that they were continuing to investigate the case.
However, in a post on social media a while ago, Shahid said that the politically motivated slaughter of his personality is an unsubstantiated lie.
Shahid, who was also the former Speaker of the Parliament and the first ever Maldivian to become the President of the UN General Assembly, is competing for the MDP Presidential ticket.
