President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced plans to dissolve the Malé City Group of Hospitals and establish the Maldives Tertiary Hospitals Group to strengthen the country’s health system, improve service delivery and reduce costs.
The announcement was made during the sixth episode of Nation Chat, a podcast series by Public Service Media (PSM).
The President reaffirmed that developing the health sector remains a key Government priority, with work to establish tertiary hospitals across the country progressing rapidly. Efforts are also under way to improve the standards of atoll hospitals and island health centres, enabling citizens to access quality healthcare closer to home and reducing the need to seek treatment abroad.
The restructuring is intended to strengthen health sector management, improve service quality and reduce costs by eliminating duplication and enhancing operational efficiency. All Government tertiary hospitals, including facilities being developed to tertiary level, will be brought under a single administrative structure.
The consolidation will facilitate the sharing of hospital facilities and allow doctors’ specialised expertise to be utilised across different hospitals, helping to improve the quality of healthcare services available to citizens.
The President stated that the hospitals would be integrated into the new system within three to four months from November. He clarified that the restructuring would not entail additional staffing requirements.
He further stated that arrangements would be made to ensure the full utilisation of doctors educated at Government expense, while foreign specialists would be stationed in the Maldives to provide specialised medical care to the highest possible standard.
