The Maldives has been nominated for the World’s Leading Green Destination 2026 at the World Travel Awards.
This comes after back-to-back wins in this category in 2024 and 2025.
Visit Maldives Corporation confirmed the country's nomination and urged everyone to vote for the Maldives on the WTA site before voting closes on the 30th of this month.
The Maldives goes to the ceremony in December with high hopes, as its main international airport, Velana International Airport (VIA), operated by the Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), was nominated in two categories at the prestigious World Travel Awards.
VIA has been nominated in the categories of "World's Leading Airport 2026" and "World's Leading Airport – Customer Experience.
In the "World's Leading Airport 2026" category, VIA is joined by world-class airports such as Singapore's Changi Airport, Dubai International Airport, Hong Kong International Airport, Istanbul's IGA Airport, Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport and New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport.
VIA joins 11 other airports for the coveted 'World's Leading Airport– Customer Experience 2026' award, including Changi Airport, Dubai International Airport, Hong Kong International Airport, as well as Abu Dhabi's Zayed International Airport, Sydney Airport and Auckland Airport.
