President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has emphasised that advancing food security by strengthening local production through sustainable farming and reducing import reliance is key to sovereignty.

The President made these remarks in a statement published on his official X account to mark National Farmers’ Day. He reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to integrating modern technology into the agricultural sector to increase productivity and improve profitability for farmers across the country.

He noted that a key objective of the Administration is to enable the domestic cultivation and availability of essential food commodities, ensuring that local production meets national demand and reduces reliance on imports.

The President underscored the importance of increasing domestic food production to protect the Maldives from global price fluctuations and disruptions to international supply chains. He added that expanding the agricultural sector would help retain foreign currency within the country and create new employment opportunities across the atolls.

Extending his warm felicitations and best wishes to farmers and their families on the occasion, the President highlighted their vital contribution to strengthening national resilience and food security.

The First Lady, Sajidha Mohamed, also posted on her official X account to commemorate the day. She noted that modern, technology-enabled agricultural practices can yield significant benefits even in limited spaces, and encouraged home gardening as a means of increasing greenery, improving air quality, and providing access to fresh, nutritious produce.

The First Lady also emphasised the importance of safe and health-conscious cultivation practices, expressing her hope that every Maldivian would develop a lasting interest in planting and horticulture.
