Gadhoo Magistrate Court has given a local man a 25-year jail sentence along with a hefty fine after he was found guilty of trafficking dimorphine.

Ali Shazeen, 37, from Gadhoo, was sentenced under Section 105 of Act No. 17/2011 (Drugs Act) on the 10th of this month.

Police said that Shazeen was arrested in an operation conducted in an area where Shazeen was farming in Laamu Atoll Gan.

Suspected drugs and liquor were recovered from the area during the execution of a search warrant.

Police said they received the case on 10 August 2021 and sent it for prosecution on 1 September later that year.

The Prosecutor General's Office filed two charges against Ali Shazeen. He was charged with drug trafficking and doing something without permission.

After considering the case, the court found that both the charges brought against him were proved beyond a reasonable doubt.

The Court also gave him a fine of MVR 100,000.
