A massive, simultaneous outage has struck major artificial intelligence platforms today, leaving millions of users worldwide—and here in the Maldives—without access to popular AI assistants like ChatGPT and Claude.

According to the popular outage tracking platform Downdetector, there has been a sharp, sudden spike in incident reports related to the leading AI services. The disruption appears to be widespread, affecting users across multiple regions, including neighboring India and other parts of the globe.

The sudden crash of both OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Anthropic’s Claude has sparked a wave of frustration across social media. Professionals, students, and businesses who have integrated these generative AI tools into their daily workflows have been left scrambling.

On X (formerly Twitter), users quickly began trending the outage, sharing screenshots of error messages and infinite loading screens. “ChatGPT and Claude both are down, what am I supposed to do now?” wrote one bewildered user, echoing a sentiment felt by many who have grown reliant on the technology for drafting, coding, and problem-solving.

While localized server issues are common for individual tech companies, a simultaneous failure of this magnitude across competing platforms is highly unusual. It remains unclear whether the outages are linked to a shared infrastructure failure, a widespread cloud server issue, or an internet routing problem.

As of publication, neither OpenAI nor Anthropic has released an official statement detailing the root cause of the crash or an estimated time for full restoration.

We will continue to monitor this developing story and provide updates as services are restored.
