Addressing concerns over the quality of the bridge, he said the project was being overseen by internationally renowned firm AECOM, which also oversaw the construction of the Sinamalé Bridge.

With Malé and Vilimalé now connected, the President said the entire bridge project, extending to Thilafushi, is expected to be completed and opened to the public within a year.

The President also highlighted the Government’s focus on training Maldivians in engineering and science. He noted that while many students pursue fields such as business and law, the country also needs civil, electronic and mechanical engineers to support national development.

President Dr Muizzu detailed the Government’s approach to economic and infrastructure development, encompassing key reforms and major projects such as the Thilamalé Bridge, describing it as part of the Administration’s vision to establish a strong and sustainable foundation for the country’s future. He emphasised that strengthening Maldivian expertise in critical fields, particularly engineering, is essential to advancing this vision and supporting the country’s long-term development.
