Maldivian authorities have made it compulsory for foreigners working in the country to deposit their salaries into bank accounts.

This change was enforced after amending the regulation on 'Foreigners Working in the Maldives'.

This 3rd amendment to the regulation has revised Article 58 of the regulation by adding subsection D after subsection C.

The Ministry of Homeland Security and Technology has stipulated that all foreign employees working in the Maldives will have to deposit their salary under the employment contract into a bank account opened in the name of the employee in a bank registered with or authorized by the Maldives Monetary Authority.

The change will come into force one month from the date of publication of the rules.

In 2016, an amendment to the Employment Act was made to impose fines on those who do not send their salaries to their bank accounts.

The government made the change after bringing a large number of illegal immigrants under the rules.
