Former Presidents Mohamed Nasheed and Abdullah Yameen have participated in the flag-hoisting ceremony held to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the resettlement of Gaafu Dhaalu Thinadhoo.
This comes after the former Presidents received a warm welcome from the people of Thinadhoo when they arrived at the island yesterday.
Both the Presidents are expected to take part in the special ceremony held on the occasion later in the day.
On February 4, 1962, the island of Thinadhoo was deserted on the orders of the then Prime Minister and later President Ibrahim Nasir to control the Svadheebu Movement, a south-led revolutionary movement aimed at separating the four main Atolls in the South of the country from the rest.
After the tragedy, the island was re-established as a residential area, and the people began to resettle there four years later, on August 22, 1966.
In 2016, former President Yameen visited the city to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the resettlement of Thinadhoo.
Mayor of Thinadhoo Saud Ali said the resettlement Day activities are already underway. These activities include various sports races, cultural activities, traditional dishes, and a special ceremony
