The Foreign Minister has rejected claims in local and social media that India is planning to build a consulate in Addu City, while the Maldives has opened its own Consulate in the Indian commercial city of Bangalore.
The Foreign Ministry said in a statement that the news published in some newspapers and on social media on the issue is not accurate.
The ministry's statement further noted that the Maldivian government has not yet taken a decision on the establishment of a foreign consulate or mission in any island other than the capital city of Malé.
It also said that the government believes that such a matter cannot be decided without extensive consultation with all relevant parties.
In addition, the Foreign Ministry statement reminded that it is very important for the peace of society and public awareness to publish true and responsible information in newspapers and social media.
