Former President Abdullah Yameen says he does not support changing the current governance system in the Maldives to a parliamentary system and that the country was not prepared for such a change.
In an interview with Sangu TV, Yameen was asked whether he supported former President Mohamed Nasheed's bid to change the governance system, to which Yameen responded by saying that he does not believe that a parliamentary system could work in the Maldives.
The Ex-President said that he too believed that some areas of the Constitution required reforms but did not feel that the governance system should be changed to a parliamentary system. He also said he knew that former President Nasheed has always advocated for a system change, but he himself had made it clear that he does not want to change the system now.
Yameen conceded that he had at some point believed in the system change, but after seeing how money can influence members of the parliament during his years at the legislative house, he now believed that the system should not be changed.
Labeling the parliamentary house as a 'sale house', the former President said that the important decisions of the country should not be left to such a place.
Yameen said instead of a system change, he believed in reforming the Constitutional areas that minimize people's rights, including ending the suffering of those who are in long-term police custody without being formally charged.
