The Maldives and India have signed Memoranda of Understanding to provide equipment for Fitness and Recreation Centres in 42 islands under India’s High Impact Community Development Projects programme.

The initiative is aimed at expanding access to fitness and recreational facilities, particularly in island communities where opportunities for organised physical activity remain limited.

The equipment will support healthier, more active and inclusive communities while creating additional spaces for young Maldivians to exercise, participate in recreational activities and maintain their physical wellbeing.

The project forms part of the people-centred development cooperation between the Maldives and India through the HICDP framework, which provides grant assistance for projects identified according to the needs of local communities.

Over the past two and a half years, India’s engagement in supporting the physical and social wellbeing of Maldivian youth has expanded across several areas, including sports facilities, community recreation, health, skills development and youth exchanges.

In October 2024, the two countries renewed their bilateral Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation in youth and sports. The broader Maldives–India partnership also identified sports facilities, schools, hospitals and community infrastructure as priority areas for development cooperation.

The two governments have additionally agreed to strengthen cooperation in mental health services, drug prevention and rehabilitation, healthcare training and access to essential health services. These areas are expected to complement sports and fitness initiatives by addressing the wider physical and psychological wellbeing of young people.

India has also committed to supporting training, skills centres, higher education institutions and a start-up incubator and accelerator intended to develop the skills and innovation potential of Maldivian youth.

The equipment support for centres in 42 islands represents a further step towards extending these benefits beyond the capital and providing young people across the atolls with improved access to fitness and recreation.
