Malé: The enduring friendship between the Maldives and India was celebrated on and off the court as officials from the Maldives' Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the High Commission of India in Malé came together for a friendly futsal match to commemorate the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
The match, played in a spirit of camaraderie and sportsmanship, was attended by Maldives' Minister of Foreign Affairs and India's High Commissioner to the Maldives, alongside senior officials from both sides.
With global football excitement surrounding the FIFA World Cup, the friendly fixture added a sporting dimension to the milestone celebrations. Team High Commission of India emerged victorious with an 8–4 scoreline against Team Ministry of Foreign Affairs, but participants agreed that the true winner was the six decades of friendship, cooperation and mutual trust shared by the two neighbouring countries.
The event reflected the warm people-to-people ties that continue to complement the comprehensive partnership between Malé and New Delhi, demonstrating how sports can serve as an effective platform for strengthening diplomatic engagement beyond formal meetings.
The futsal match forms part of a broader calendar of events organised throughout 2026 to celebrate 60 years of Maldives–India diplomatic relations. Since the beginning of the anniversary year, both countries have jointly hosted a wide range of commemorative activities highlighting their longstanding partnership.
These initiatives have included cultural performances, exhibitions, youth engagement programmes, sporting events, educational exchanges, environmental campaigns, health and wellness activities, diplomatic receptions and community outreach programmes involving citizens of both countries. The celebrations have also showcased the vibrant contribution of the Indian community in the Maldives while reaffirming the close friendship between the peoples of the two nations.
India and the Maldives established diplomatic relations in 1966, shortly after the Maldives gained independence. Over the past six decades, the partnership has expanded across numerous sectors, including infrastructure development, defence and maritime security cooperation, healthcare, education, trade, tourism, disaster response and capacity building. India has consistently been among the Maldives' closest development partners, supporting major infrastructure projects, emergency assistance, scholarships and human resource development.
As both countries commemorate this historic milestone, the continued exchange of cultural, sporting and diplomatic engagements underscores a shared commitment to further strengthening bilateral cooperation and deepening the bonds of friendship for generations to come.
