New Delhi: India’s defence production reached a record US$20.7 billion in the financial year 2025-26, underscoring the rapid expansion of the country’s domestic defence manufacturing sector.
According to India’s Ministry of Defence, production grew by 15.6 percent from US$17.9 billion recorded in the previous fiscal year. The latest figure also marks a 110 percent increase from FY 2020-21, when defence production stood at approximately US$9.8 billion.
The sector has witnessed sustained growth over the past decade, with production rising nearly fourfold from US$5.1 billion in FY 2013-14.
The increase in domestic manufacturing has also contributed to record defence exports, which reached US$4.5 billion during FY 2025-26.
India’s Defence Minister Rajnath Singh welcomed the milestone, describing it as a reflection of the country’s growing defence industrial capabilities and expanding role in global defence markets.
In a post on X, Singh credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership for driving growth in the sector and acknowledged the contributions of the Department of Defence Production, public sector enterprises and private industry stakeholders.
He said the latest figures demonstrate the strength of India’s defence manufacturing ecosystem and its continued progress towards self-reliance in the sector.
The Indian government has prioritised indigenous defence production through a series of policy initiatives aimed at boosting domestic manufacturing, increasing private sector participation and expanding export opportunities.
With continued investment, policy support and growing international demand for Indian-made defence equipment, the sector is expected to maintain its strong growth trajectory in the coming years. (Source: Indiablooms.com)
