Malé, Maldives – The second tranche of Measles-Rubella (MR) vaccines and medical supplies from India arrived in the Maldives today, reaffirming the strong and enduring partnership between the two countries and their shared commitment to safeguarding public health.
The assistance was provided by the Government of India in response to the recent measles outbreak in the Maldives under its ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy and its longstanding role as a trusted first responder in times of need.
The latest consignment includes 20,000 doses of Measles-Rubella vaccines and approximately three tonnes of medical supplies comprising medicines, syringes, diagnostic kits and other essential medical consumables. The assistance is expected to strengthen the Maldives’ outbreak response efforts and support national health authorities in preventing the further spread of the disease.
The delivery reflects the close cooperation between the Maldives and India in the health sector, which has remained a key pillar of bilateral relations. Over the years, India has provided significant support to the Maldives through medical assistance, capacity building, healthcare infrastructure development and emergency response initiatives.
India has contributed to the strengthening of the Maldivian healthcare system through projects such as the development of healthcare facilities, training opportunities for Maldivian medical professionals and the provision of medicines and medical equipment. During the COVID-19 pandemic, India was among the first countries to assist the Maldives with vaccines, medicines, medical supplies and essential support to ensure continuity of healthcare services.
The arrival of the latest vaccine shipment further underscores the close partnership between the two countries and their continued collaboration in promoting public health and enhancing healthcare resilience in the Maldives.
Officials noted that the timely assistance will play an important role in supporting national vaccination efforts and protecting communities from the ongoing measles outbreak.
