The High Commissioner of India to the Maldives, H.E. G. Balasubramanian, joined Minister Iruthisham Adam and Environment Minister Alee Shareef on 14 June to commemorate the 60th anniversary of Maldivian independence through a special tree-planting event held at Central Park.

The event highlighted the shared commitment of the Maldives and India to environmental sustainability, linking the Maldives’ “5 Million Tree Project” with India’s “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” campaign. Officials noted that both initiatives promote environmental conservation, climate resilience and community participation in creating greener and healthier living spaces.

Speaking during the event, participants emphasized the importance of collective action in addressing environmental challenges and fostering a culture of sustainability among future generations.

The tree-planting ceremony also reflected the longstanding friendship between the Maldives and India, which continues to expand beyond development cooperation into people-to-people engagement, cultural exchange and community-based initiatives.

India maintains a vibrant diaspora presence in the Maldives and actively supports cultural and educational exchanges through the Indian Cultural Centre, which regularly conducts programmes in music, dance, yoga, language learning and the arts. Such initiatives have helped strengthen ties between the people of the two countries while promoting mutual understanding and cultural appreciation.

The Maldives and India have continued to collaborate across a wide range of sectors, including infrastructure development, healthcare, education, capacity building, sports and environmental sustainability, reinforcing the close partnership between the two neighbouring nations.
