Malé, Maldives — The Malé City Council hosted “Rhythms Beyond Borders,” a vibrant cultural showcase celebrating the longstanding friendship between the Maldives and India through music, dance and artistic expression.
Held under the theme “One Stage. Two Nations. One Ocean. Endless Rhythms,” the event brought together performers, artists and cultural enthusiasts from both countries, highlighting the deep people-to-people ties that have continued to strengthen Maldives–India relations over the years.
The programme featured a blend of traditional and contemporary performances, reflecting the rich cultural heritage of the two Indian Ocean neighbours while promoting mutual understanding and cultural exchange.
The event also underscored India's continued support for cultural development in the Maldives. Through the Indian Cultural Centre in Malé, India has played an active role in promoting cultural engagement and educational opportunities for Maldivians. The centre regularly conducts classes and workshops in Indian classical and contemporary dance, music, yoga, visual arts and other cultural disciplines, providing opportunities for hundreds of Maldivians to learn new skills and engage in cross-cultural activities.
Over the years, the Indian Cultural Centre has hosted numerous cultural festivals, exhibitions, performances and exchange programmes aimed at strengthening cultural ties between the two countries. These initiatives have contributed significantly to fostering greater understanding and friendship among the people of the Maldives and India.
Maldives and India share a long history of cultural, economic and people-to-people connections rooted in centuries of interaction across the Indian Ocean. In recent years, cultural diplomacy has become an increasingly important pillar of bilateral relations, complementing cooperation in areas such as healthcare, education, infrastructure development, sports and capacity building.
The “Rhythms Beyond Borders” celebration served as a reflection of these enduring ties, bringing communities together through the universal language of music and dance while reinforcing the shared commitment of both nations to cultural cooperation and friendship.
The event concluded with performances symbolising unity, diversity and the close bonds that continue to connect the Maldives and India across the ocean they share.
